When someone dies suddenly, the county coroner or medical examiner takes custody of the body and of the facts. Which office that is depends on the county: most of California uses a combined Sheriff-Coroner, a handful operate an independent Medical Examiner, and one county has a standalone Coroner. It changes who you call.
